Pro-Brunch, Anti-War

Another brunch, another great time catching up with friends. We were a smaller group than expected thanks to some serious train issues in Queens, but the five of us who did gather had a great brunch. Dublin 6 was surprisingly not crowded, which made for good service and the chance to take our time catching up over eggs and coffee. Brunch favorites, like Popover Cafe and Good Enough to Eat, which I love, are great, but they get a little intense during the rush. It's easy to feel hurried when you see a line of people waiting for your table and giving you the evil eye as you linger over yet another coffee refill. Feeling welcome to stay for as long as we liked was one of the great benefits of Dublin 6. Another benefit? The not one but two bloody marys that came with my breakfast!

The location proved good, too. After we all went our separate ways, Todd and I stumbled across an anti-war rally just a few blocks away. It was heartening to see so many people out there making themselves heard, and we joined in with them for a few blocks before heading back up town.

Interesting Irish Easter Traditions

I thought that this was appropriate for the place that we're having brunch tomorrow. I've quoted it below.

In Ireland, people dance in the streets on Easter Sunday. The dancers compete for the prize of a cake.

In Ireland Easter is a very sacred time of fasting and prayer. On Easter Saturday at church hundreds of small candles are lit off the Paschal candle that has been blessed by the priest. On Easter Sunday a quiet meal is eaten at home. Traditional Easter meal of leek soup and roasted spring lamb.

Little Easter houses are built in some parts of England as well. These are filled with coloured eggs. The eggs are rolled down a hill in a competition before they are eaten.

Irish Easter Customs

  • Clean house thoroughly Inside and out-whitewash applied.
  • Obtain New clothes.
  • Good Friday-do no work on the land just in the house.
  • Fast More than is Required on Good Friday.
  • Good Friday- Plant a small amount of crop seed to bring blessing on it all.
  • Shed no blood on Good Friday, work no wood, hammer no nail .
  • Maintain quiet on good Friday from Noon till three P.M.
  • Visit church-take off shoes-good Friday. Visit holy wells and graveyards.
  • Do not fish with nets or lines on Good Friday no fishing boat puts out to sea alternatively gather bia tragha-shore food-seaweed and shellfish for the Main meal.
  • Cut your hair on good Friday to prevent headaches in the year to come-trim finger and toe nails.
  • Water from the holy well will have curative properties on Good Friday.
  • A child born on Good Friday and baptized on Easter Sunday had gift of healing. (if a boy he should go into the ministry) die on good Friday go right the heaven.
  • Eggs laid on Good Friday-Mark with cross and each eat one on Easter Sunday. Eggs Hatching on that day will produce healthy chicks.

Easter Saturday

  • Have Holy water blessed.
  • Drink three sips of holy water each for health. Sprinkle on everything for good luck.
  • Bring cinders from the Paschal fire to be blessed.

Easter Sunday

  • Butchers have mock funeral for a herring symbolizing end to abstinence.-whip the herring, have a procession involving the herring.
  • Go to church and then herring procession.
  • Go up at sunrise to view the sun dancing with joy.
  • View the reflection of the sun in a pail of water and move it so the sun appears to dance.
  • Do something with eggs. Give them, color them
  • Have a Cludog or cluideog ritual-children collect and cook eggs and other food in a structure which they make on the edge of the farm-roasted eggs.
  • Brightly dressed Tobies go from place to place to demand the eggs of Easter Singing, dancing dressed in bright colored rags.
  • Keep shells of Easter eggs for the May bush. 9.Roll eggs to race them.-may be Presbyterian custom.
  • Have feast on Easter-Kill a cow if you can-
  • Take down the Spoilin meith na hlnide-little piece of meat pinned up at lent and burn it giving house a rich smell
  • Have a Cake Dance. Cake being the prize for best dancer. Easter cake dance-a pruthog.
  • Go to a "Sunday's" well-have a bonfire.

Irish Pancake Recipe:

Basic Batter Ingredients:
100g flour Pinch salt
1 egg 150ml milk
Oil to fry

Method:
Sieve the flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well in the centre of the flour and beat in the egg using the back of a wooden spoon.
Slowly add the milk and beat in gradually to avoid lumps. Beat for a few minutes to entrap air. Leave in the fridge to chill.
Heat a drop of oil on the frying pan, ensure the pan gets really hot. Pour on a little batter to coat the base of the pan. Cook for approx. 2 minutes.
Toss the pancake and cook for about 1 minute or until golden brown.
The pancakes can be served with lemon, icing sugar, fruit or savoury items.

Easter Dinner

The Easter Sunday dinner is similar to the Christmas meal. It usually consists of a turkey or lamb, along with potatoes and vegetables. Desert can be anything, but usually children stuff their faces with their chocolate Easter eggs!

Irish Brunch

We're not one to celebrate St. Patty's Day. Frankly after trying to get jokes at the last Parade and hearing no less than 30 of the worst and most despicable racist jokes, I'm pretty much over that drunken Irish holiday. However, that doesn't mean we don't want to show some respect for our proper Irish brethren. So to honor those Irish folk who can hold their swill we've decided to go to DUBLIN6 where you can get a "full irish breakfast" (not a half) and with the price fix you get 2 drinks. We hope that you can come and tell us a great story about how drunk you were at one St. Patty's Day. I'm sure Tori can come up with more than a few since she has a wee bit of Irish in her.

And I promise that I will not tell any of the horrible jokes that I heard at the parade. This one is about the cleanest drunken joke I could find.

Oscar Day Delight

Thanks to everyone that joined us for this month's brunch. You have now been canonized as an early adopter. As was everyone at the last brunch. From here on out if you come, you are a second place finisher.

The conversation about politics was very short, because everyone didn't care who won so long as it wasn't McCain, Fuckabee, or Shrub. Which is surprisingly because the Bloody Marys were very strong and spicy. I was sure that everyone would have imbibed enough from that one drink to really lay into McCain. I guess Ben did, but it wasn't the focus of the brunch. Instead the Oscars was topic of speculation, which probably should shed some sociological light on the status of politics in America or NYC.

For those that missed the event, shame on you, you really missed out on the Arrepas con Benedictos. I'm a fan and fanatic of Eggs Benedict and these were awesome. The corn meal under the poached eggs with the pungent smoked ham was very, very good. Everyone went from being very talky to being very quiet and moaning once the food came.

The service wasn't the best, there was a bit of discontent about not seating us and the use of an orange handled carafe to dispense regular coffee, but the food was very good. The Bloody Marys and the Arrepas con Benedictos were a great match. I'd go there again. But this time I'm going to schedule a little bit of nap time in my day.

Afterwards, everyone went to Trader Joe's and I bought way too much stuff, but lucked in with the salted brownies, which if you read my Parenting Blog, you'd know how much I love TJ's,

Food and Photos

Today's brunch was a success! Yuca Bar was 100% empty when we got there, which was both relieving and silly. I was relieved to see all those empty tables because no place in New York seems to take brunch reservations, and getting a table for a large group is the biggest logistical challenge to brunch-a-month. It became silly when, as the only people in the entire restaurant, the hostess refused to seat us as an incomplete party in case someone else needed the table. To her credit, the place really did fill up by the time we left, but it was a laughable that she made us stand around in the empty restaurant waiting for more people to show.

The food was great (thanks to Jen and Krysta for the recommendation!). I had the Arepas Benedictos with smoked salmon and a really, really good bloody mary. Rena brought her new fancy camera to breakfast, so you can see my meal below. She also got a few good pics of the restaurant from the outside, including one with Ben (hiding), Lorraina, Todd, and me.

See the rest of you next month at the third installment!

Politics over coffee

So as we settle down into our meal, would you think it rude if I did a little political speculation and polling around the table? I really would like to know what you all think of Hill vs. Barak? And who do you think they'd choose, if they won the nomination, for VP?

Is there anyone coming that is a Republican? I'm curious to know what Republicans think of Obama. My father said that he liked Obama better than McCain. And he's a die-hard R!

Talk to you on Sunday!

Yuca Bar

Happy Super-dooper Tsunami Tuesday, everyone! Hats off to all of you who went out and voted today--way to do your civic duty. I'm a woman possessed with this election, so even though this blog is all about brunch, I can't avoid making this post about the primaries.

To that end, we want to celebrate all of New York's Hispanic voters with a brunch at Yuca Bar, a Latin American eatery Jen recommended. I think their latin take on eggs benedict over corn arepas should be very interesting. I know that that's what Todd will be getting. Neither of us have been there, but in the spirit of adventure we want to try it for the first time with all of you.

Next Brunch-A-Month will be February 24th, and we hope you come to it. Be prepared to answer this question: who did you vote for, and why?

Peace in East,
- Todd and Tori

What a good brunch!

'Twas a fascinating bunch at the brunch while I munched. The talk was brisk and lively. The conversations turned on many subjects, as Tori's blog post pointed out. I was thoroughly fascinated by the stories of creating an indoor compost and hearing who is voting for whom when Super Tuesday comes to NYC. I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves.

I don't know about everybody else, but my food was very good; I ordered stuffed French toast with raspberry cream cheese.
Yummy! Yum. Yum.

I can't wait until the next one, which is apparently Feb. 24th. Hope even more people come. If you have any ideas about where it might be good to have our brunch, we are all ears.

Brunch Success

Thank you to everyone who came out Sunday morning to have brunch with Todd and me. I was thrilled to have such a good turnout for our first brunch-a-month and had a great time. Anecdotally, it sounds like everyone else did, too. For those of you who couldn’t make it on Sunday and are weighing whether to brunch with us next time, here are just a few of the conversational topics you missed: Lots of movie talk, focused mostly on No Country for Old Men and the sadness of Heath Ledger’s death; the addictive nature of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the wholly fascinating and unique homecoming traditions at the University of Montevallo, shopping at Target, and worm composting in NYC apartments.

The next brunch is tentatively set for February 24, but we’ll send out another invitation and post updates here once it’s nailed down more.

Deluxe - Background check

I called Deluxe to see if they could handle 6-12 people. I'm really glad I did. They don't take reservations, but were very accommodating and while they thought they could handle it their manager is going to call me back. I've tenatively told them January 27th, which sounds about right to me. Assuming that this will fly with the manager we are a go for January 27th at Deluxe.

On a side note, I've been using Skype and GrandCentral together and I have to say that being able to sit anywhere with a computer, wirelessly, and talk is really a great time saver and money saver. I was doing these crazy long conf. calls and was just eating through my cell bill. But now that I've gotten this I find myself calling everyone and never leaving the warm coziness of my big chair in my bedroom. Ever. In fact, I just made the "reservation" call with Deluxe using GrandCentral to call my Skype number. I can see already that GrandCentral will be my permanent phone book.

Eat, bitch!

Picture it: Deluxe, Sunday morning, Todd was slightly hung over. The wait staff was s...l...o...w... and we were reminiscing about the good old days when we actually saw our friends regularly instead of just blogging to them and sending them Facebook pokes (that's just Todd; after an initial introduction to Friendster oh so many years ago I quickly decided online social networking was lame). Over coffee and juice, and waiting desperately for our bacon, we had a joint brain child and Brunch-a-Month was born.

Every month we'd like to see your sunny face on a Sunday morning with a nice plate of sunny side up eggs. We will scope out a great place with great food, organize the time, and invite the most interesting people on earth (though Dennis Kucinich is probably booked most Sundays, we are inviting him).

Please join us. The first brunch will be later this month, and we'll be sending you an evite and updating this blog regularly about the particulars. Hope to see you for brunch.
